Confession

Since Christmas hit, I’ve been eating chocolate and baked good s for breakfast every day. Not even for breakfast, more for pre-breakfast. Not even enjoying them all that much either…. not today though – so hopefully I’m finally coming back to normal! All week I’ve been raiding the candy and other stuff bought for all our visitors in the morning, then eating breakfast, then going back for more, then eating lunch – and then feeling stuffed and icky all afternoon, and not always managing dinner. And the scales are reflecting the bad stuff in ways I’m not yet ready to tell the blog about.

Just wanted to get that off my chest.

Today, I don’t want chocolate. Yet, anyway. My Dad, his wife and my brother are visiting today so I probably will be eating more of that sort of thing later. When they go home, they will be carrying Tupperware boxes full of stuff that I don’t want in my house any more, and hopefully that will allow me to reset my eating-crap trigger to the default position. I’m actually kind of sick of it all. Not that that would necessarily stop me. For some reason this year has really thrown me off track, but I’m now (finally) at least working towards getting back on…

The snow’s all gone!!!

And we’re back to the standard dreary grey soggy winter weather at last!

I didn’t post yesterday because my flu went to my stomach. I craved (and caved to) loads of crap in the morning, but stopped eating after lunch when I felt sick, and kept feeling sick for the rest of the day. No details, but lets just say I was anti-social, miserable, absolutely uninterested in food and very sorry for myself all afternoon & evening, and had a really early night.

But that worked – and this morning I woke up hungry, healthy (mostly) and much much happier!!!

I walked into town this morning, via a roundabout route to extend the walk a bit. I had had another overly indulgent morning, but we are working our way through the candy & chocolate and soon we’ll be taking leftovers to work so it won’t last much longer!

Food today:

Breakfast: Home-made oat and pumpkin waffle with Greek yoghurt and melon. (Waffle recipe based on this one, replacing the nut butter with canned pumpkin puree and adding a little vanilla essence & mixed spice)

Lunch: Pulled pork with sauerkraut in rolls followed by a slice of chocolate sauerkraut cake (just realised  I had 2 dishes with sauerkraut in for lunch!)

Dinner: Huge stir fry with cavolo nero cabbage, topped with slow-cooked tofu with cranberry sauce (sounds like a strange mixture but it was delicious – the tofu was cooked perfectly and had a lovely touch of sweetness!) The tofu was based on this recipe, as someone in the comments had adapted the recipe that way…

Weight today: 10st 7.25lbs (147.25 (could so definitely have been worse – and certainly will be tomorrow, given the chocolate and nuts…)

Thawing at last

It’s actually 4 degrees right now – ABOVE zero!!! The snow is melting at last, and I’m so happy to see it. And also to have started to include some healthy foods in my eating today, though mixed in with more of the ultra fattening (but delicious) rubbish I’ve been eating for the last 2 days.

Christmas and Boxing Day both went great. All my baking was really successful, and the savoury cooking went down well too. I didn’t take any photos as my presentation left A LOT to desire – when dishing up for 5 I tend to throw everything in the direction of the plates and hope that it sticks Winking smile

On Christmas Day we had a fairly quiet day. For the last several years its been a rowdy bacchanalia of a day, and I was relieved to have a more peaceful one this year for a change. I didn’t get out for a walk as my Mum isn’t yet up to it and I didn’t have time before they got here. Everyone stayed the night, and then soon after they went home on Boxing Day M’s family arrived for their visit. This was also quieter than I expected as two people were recovering from the flu and not themselves! Sadly for me, I think I may be about to come down with it, as I keep getting sore throats and sniffles! I did manage to get out for a walk across the fields with my father in law in the afternoon, and the cold fresh air perked us both up no end!!!

This morning every one made it up with no hangovers and the family headed for home, then I headed for Waitrose to get some shopping. I bought myself a nice Christmas present – a waffle iron – and I’ve been experimenting with it today. So far I’ve discovered that I am not a natural waffle maker! (waffletier???) I’ve made three batches, and the local birds have benefited a fair bit from my efforts (they are improving though – and the birds do seem fairly appreciative!)

Not going to do a today’s food thing this afternoon as I have eaten a lot of crap. There’s only so many times I can mention ‘a handful of mixed M&Ms’ or ‘a couple of mince-pies’ before I start blushing at my own greed! I have just frozen a load of cake and cookies and will defrost some of it on New Year’s Eve when my Dad and his wife are coming over. I did however have all bran for breakfast and made garlic pasta for lunch (to try to cure my cold) so there was some real food in there too!!!

Hope you’ve all had a great holiday, enjoyed yourselves and (if you need to) got it all out of your system to feel refreshed and ready to climb back on the wagon real soon! I’ll see you there…. but probably not today, as I’ve had one or two Pina Coladas already and now need a beer to wash the sweetness out of my mouth….

Happy Christmas everybody!!!

My Mum, her OH and my brother are visiting tomorrow, and my husband’s family on Boxing Day, so unless I get up early enough to blog beforehand I’m unlikely to posting for a couple of days.

So have a great holiday!

Baking marathon…

I have spent almost all day today cooking and baking like a mad woman…

I did manage a walk into town in the morning to get a few bits and pieces that I had still managed to forget despite all my many shopping trips this week – and even then, I just ran out of plain (all purpose) flour – luckily after I finished!!! On the way I saw my favourite beautiful friendly German Shepherd, who was delirious with joy to see me again. She gives me such a boost, even though I know she’s almost totally lacking indiscrimination when it comes to loving absolutely everybody in the world (but she likes me best…Winking smile)

First thing this morning I started a beef brisket cooking for tomorrow’s lunch, and a beef and ale stew for Boxing Day lunch, both in my slow-cookers, then baked about 30 cookies – chocolate with peppermint chips. After my walk I baked a batch of chocolate cookies with peanut butter chips, roasted a turkey breast crown, and baked 3 dozen mince-pies. This afternoon I followed that up by baking a rum cake (my Bundt cake tin was too small for the amount of batter, so I ended up with a load of mini rum cake-lets cooked in a mini-muffin pan as well), simmering up a rum syrup to soak the cake with, and icing the chocolate sauerkraut cake I made a few weeks ago (though I did cheat and buy some chocolate fudge flavour buttercream icing). Just typing that out has tired me out almost as much as actually doing it all – and my kitchen looks like a bomb hit it!!!

Snacks: All bran with peaches & blueberries; a mince pie; 2 3 mini rum cake-lets (one with rum syrup, 2 without); a mini bag of Reese’s Pieces from my Christmas stash of candy; a Reese’s peanut butter cup ditto… hmm, well, I needed the energy for all that hard work!!!

I didn’t weigh myself this morning after yesterday’s pizza for dinner….

Baking Day

No walking today, but instead I spent the morning baking two apple cakes and a loaf of cranberry orange loaf and doing some shopping for Christmas. I did all the mixing, creaming and stirring by hand with no mechanical assistance as I wasn’t getting any real exercise!!! Of course I had to lick the odd spoon and bowl in the process…. Winking smile

I also made a big vat of chicken and vegetable soup, but there I did use my food processor to chop the vegetables. The chicken was from the carcass of the last slow cooked ‘Rotisserie chicken’ I made, so I’m hoping the seasoning blend rubbed into the chicken before I cooked it will have flavoured the soup as well.

In the afternoon I watched Knight and Day, and enjoyed it – it was funny and non-stop, and really killed a good afternoon!

Fed up of snow and ice

I kept slipping and sliding all over the place on my walk, which was annoying especially as I had to keep catching onto gates / fences to stay upright. Plus I’m sick of the cold. And still feeling apathetic, knackered, lacking energy and Christmas spirit. Anyone up for a trip to Aruba???

I spent the afternoon baking – a loaf of banana ginger tea-bread and one of quick raisin bread. Somehow I couldn’t resist messing with butter, flour and sugar today – and I’m planning cookies, mince-pies and rum cake in the next couple of days too! Oh yes, and I made a loaf of cranberry orange bread and a chocolate-sauerkraut sandwich cake during my blogging break too, both of which are in the freezer for Christmas. I must remember there’s a need for savoury food too… as usual I’m planning to give away a lot of baked goods, so the fact that I’m also considering making a second loaf of orange-cranberry bread and an apple cake isn’t as scary as it first appears… Winking smile

And no work today either….

Not much more snow, but sub-zero temperatures keeping the roads icy – and more snow forecast for this evening / tonight. Did you ever see a more snow-laden, threatening sky than the one below???

I tramped across the fields again today, and again found it completely exhausting. I don’t think I estimated the calories involved in walking through snow very accurately, so may not have eaten enough yesterday!

In the afternoon I was feeling decidedly weak and feeble, and about 90 years old. So I collapsed on the sofa and watched 30 Days of Night: Dark Days – a very good disbelief suspending vampire movie if you like Vampires – but only if you already saw the first movie!

Food today:

Breakfast: Waffles with maple syrup, fruit salad and Greek yoghurt (I added a banana after taking the photograph)

Dinner: Pulled pork with sauerkraut served over brown rice with roasted Brussels sprouts & carrots. The pulled pork doesn’t look very exciting, but it tasted very good, slightly tangy, maybe a touch too salty for perfection but loads of flavour.

Slogging through the snow…

I didn’t go to work today because of icy conditions in my road and a forecast of lots more snow, which are currently coming true.

As there was no way on earth I was taking my car out (I went to Tesco on Saturday and the useless pile of junk got stuck on the way home (luckily in my street, not 3 miles away) I decided to walk into town over the fields. My God, its hard work walking on uneven ground in thick snow carrying a heavy rucksack!!! I found a frozen stream under the snow by walking onto it and slipping and falling onto one knee, and by the time I got home I looked like Sniffy the Snow-woman!!! (Yep, I think I’m coming down with a cold….)

In the afternoon we watched Iron Man 2, downloaded on M’s PS3. It took forever to download it – we originally wanted to watch it yesterday, but the download was too slow!!! I thoroughly enjoyed the movie, action, humour, and lets be honest, Robert Downey Jr…. Winking smile

Apologies all

I have really gone off the blogging boil lately, I don't know why. One reason is probably just getting out of the habit while I was away (I know I still owe you posts from my holiday). In addition deciding to maintain until the New Year has me uninspired & I'm not making the best food choices as a result, but the biggest logistical problem is that I don't have email at my new job - can you believe that??? It's like living in the Dark ages, and deprives me of the chance to write posts at lunchtime and email them home, which used to be my trick.

I have been keeping up with all the blows I read, but due to numb-brain syndrome I haven't been commenting - not because I'm not rooting for you / don't love you any more, just because I'm so horrifyingly trivial and shallow these days. I'm sooorrry guys - and hope to find a new routine that works for me soon, so please hang in there!

Since starting my new job I've had one horrible binge plus too many naughty treats. I am still managing to maintain though, and remain at a healthy weight, though not the weight I prefer. I also need to work out some healthy eating habits that fit in with the available mod cons in the office, and the large number of eating opportunities all around me...

New beginnings

I started my new contract today. I spent the weekend absolutely paranoid and petrified that I wasn’t going to be up to it, and would be fired possibly on the 1st day… Also envisaging spending 3 or 4 hours on the road due to heavy city centre traffic… Is there a saying about ‘expect the worst so you can only be pleasantly surprised’, or did I make it up? If not, there should be…

Obviously I didn’t achieve anything productive today, as a testing contractor there is always an initial steep learning curve where you stare baffled as people introduce a million strangers, mention a thousand completely incomprehensible business terms and acronyms, and generally convince you that you look like a complete fool. Even in my paranoia though, I do realise that that’s just a part of being a contractor and moving jobs a lot.

I drove in bright and early today – I was supposed to arrive at 9am, I reached the town centre at 8am and spent the hour before work walking around the town, drinking a Costa coffee Creme brulee latte (non-fat of course) and trying to relax. The journey took less time than I used to drive to my last contract. I left work at 5pm, and was home by 10 to 6 – no problem! I’m sure that not all journeys will go that well, but as I’ve now been told that I can leave work at 4pm if I start early enough, I’m feeling much better about that as well!

Food today… having no clue what to expect, I took a ham sandwich, an apple and a couple of protein bars to make sure I was covered. I brought back the ham sandwich, and both protein bars. I was invited to a meeting that included a buffet lunch, and though the actual food items were NOT healthy, I only filled a small plate once, and was very satisfied by the amount of food I ate (very rare for me in buffet scenarios). I had a few potato wedges, a small slice of pizza, one breaded chicken finger, one chicken skewer, and one mini spring roll. Everything was small, and I drank diet coke with it. I will admit that in the meeting I also ate 2 chocolate biscuits and one mince-pie (it was still hot, what are you going to do…?)

I trained before work, and intend to try to keep that up. My breakfast was a normal bowl of all bran with fruit, and for dinner, a massive salad with chicken from a whole bird that I slow-cooked overnight. I struggled to eat it!

No urge to binge, even with the stress and unknown quantities, no yummy Costa coffee baked goodies… I’m pretty pleased with my first day!

Thursday

It was so much warmer yesterday that I actually found myself taking off my hat & gloves and regretting my big coat as I walked into town. The day was pretty uneventful and uninspiring otherwise, so I’m just popping in to say hello!

Wednesday

After failing to get my cholesterol checked I had to go into town to get a hair cut (hate getting my hair cut!). That went OK, and I enjoyed walking home as the snow & frost melted and fell off the trees in a nice little mini-thaw. Not enough of a thaw to satisfy the swans and ducks on the frozen pond though…

In the afternoon I discovered that I made a mistake ordering some booze for Christmas – a good mistake though! I found a great couple of sites stocking American microbrews, and ordered a load to cover Christmas & the New Year, and maybe the few weeks until then Winking smile and accidentally added two cases of one beer (Goose Island ‘Honkers Ale’) instead of one. What a shame! I tried a bottle yesterday, and luckily I liked it a lot (I’d never had it before so that could have gone very differently). The only problem was that the idiot FedEx guy left the boxes next door when he came while I was out, and carrying them back home gave me another chance to do in my back again – Yay!!!

Breakfast: Pumpkin oatbran with whey powder, topped with a little brown sugar & mixed spice
